What Is Premium Scotch?

Scotch whisky is a type of malt or grain whiskey made exclusively in Scotland. Beyond its allusion to the region of production, the moniker “scotch whisky” comes with a detailed set of requirements, including a minimum ABV of at least 40% and a minimum aging period of 3 years in oak barrels.

Where Does Scotch Come From?

Scotch comes from Scotland. In fact, the word “whiskey” comes from the Gaelic word for water, “uisge” (anglicized to whisky). This is why scotch is the only type of whiskey that can be referred to as whisky without the e. The five malt whisky-producing regions in Scotland are:

Campbeltown

Highland

Islay

Lowland

Speyside

How Is Premium Scotch Made?

The first step in the scotch-making process is harvesting the cereal grain and creating the grain mash (which must contain malted barley). The mash is fermented, then distilled, then matured in oak casks for at least three years. After aging, the scotch is typically blended (from a variety of oak casks, sometimes of different ages called “blended scotch”), then bottled. However, some more exclusive varieties are unblended, “single malt” scotch.

How Many Calories Are In Scotch?

Scotch contains around 100 calories per 1.5-ounce serving, give or take.

How Much Sugar Is In Scotch?

Like other spirits, scotch contains practically zero sugar.

What Are The Different Types of Premium Scotch?

Scotch whisky is divided into four discrete categories.

Single malt

The grain mash of a single malt scotch is made entirely of malted barley. Single malt scotch is never blended.

Blended

“Blended” indicates that the bottled scotch was blended from multiple batches, sometimes from different distilleries. Most scotch on the market is blended scotch whisky.

Single grain

Counterintuitively, the “single” in single grain refers to a single distillery, not a single grain. Single-grain scotch must be made exclusively at one distillery and never blended with spirits from outside of said distillery.

Blended malt

Blended malt scotch is made by blending single malt spirits from multiple distilleries.
