Founded in Reims in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot, the French Champagne House of Veuve Clicquot took a new direction in 1805, when Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin assumed control of the family firm after being widowed at 27. Her leadership built the house into one of the most significant names in Champagne and made her one of the first modern businesswomen. Her peers came to call her La Grande Dame de la Champagne, and three of her innovations remain part of champagne production today: the first vintage champagne in 1810, blended from a single harvest; the riddling table in 1816, devised to clarify the wine and now fundamental to the traditional method; and in 1818, the first ros\u00e9 champagne made by assemblage, blending her red wine with champagne.
The house holds vineyard holdings notable for both scale and quality, with most vines classified as Grands Crus or Premiers Crus, the two highest rankings for Champagne vineyards. Pinot Noir dominates the blend, lending strength, complexity and elegance.
