Part of the 2023 Special Release Spirited Xchange collection, Oban The Soul of Calypso is a limited release and a first for the distillery: an 11 year old single malt from Scotland shaped by craft and cultures from elsewhere in the world. The spirit spent its 11 years finishing in Caribbean pot still rum casks, and the bottle artwork comes from Kim Thompson, an artist whose work draws on retro nostalgia, Afrofuturism, and folklore.
The aroma opens on seaweed, citrus, and mango. The palate is smooth, carrying fruit, citrus, salt, and spice, and the finish is short with a spicy-sweet edge. Bottled at 58% ABV in a 750 ml format, it works neat, over ice, or with a splash of water to bring the citrus forward.
