Todd Leopold built this rye by studying the flavor profiles of authentic Maryland ryes made across six decades, then working backward to recreate what that style tasted like. The mash bill runs 65% rye, the ratio behind the softer, fruitier character that set Maryland rye apart during the Civil War era, when Union soldiers stationed in Washington DC drank it. Distillation takes place in a three chamber still, and the whiskey then spends nine years maturing in three separate chambers, giving the flavors room to develop with precision.
Bottled at 50% ABV in a 750 ml format, it opens with peanut shell, maple syrup, cocoa nibs and hazelnuts, followed by plum, cherries, apricot and orange marmalade.
