Description
Whisky of Fire comes from Kyrö Distillery Company in Finland, a venture started by five friends in a sauna in 2012. It is a single-grain rye whisky built on the distillery's 100% wholegrain Finnish rye, and its name and design take their cue from the world of Game of Thrones. The spirit matures in ex-bourbon casks before moving into rum barrels for finishing, a limited release that sets smoky weight against layers of sweetness and rye spice rather than following Scotch or Irish templates.
The aroma opens with light smoke, toasted rye bread and spiced apple jam. On the palate there is more involved smoke alongside mineral notes, sweet grain, blackberry and a trace of menthol, and the long, warming finish carries rye spice, a gentle rum sweetness and a cool touch of mint. Bottled at 46.6% ABV in a 700 ml bottle, it puts smoked malted rye front and centre, with the rum cask finish adding balance that keeps the smoke measured.
