Ardbeg was established in 1815 on Islay, the remote Scottish island known as the Queen of the Hebrides, where soft water, fertile soil and deep peat beds support its distinctive single malts. The distillery sits by a rocky cove on the island's wild southern coast, in a landscape shaped by Celtic monks, Norse raiders, the Lords of the Isles and 19th century smugglers. Ardbeg's knotwork and its well-known A come from that Celtic heritage, echoing the 8th century Kildalton Cross a few miles north of the distillery.
