Ardbeg 17 Years Old first appeared in 1997, following the distillery's reopening, and was discontinued in 2004. Twenty-five years on, Master Distiller Dr Bill Lumsden has rebuilt the expression to match the original flavour profile, bottled once again at 40% ABV in a 750 ml format.
The character is balmy and medicinal, with a mineral edge that opens into sweet smoke and malted barley, plus tar and oak through the peat. The nose is clean and unusually elegant for Ardbeg: pine resin, aniseed, sea spray and lavender soap. A little water draws out flinty minerality, gentle peat smoke and toasted bread. Matured in ex-bourbon casks and chill filtered, this Committee Exclusive single malt Scotch whisky returns a familiar bottling to the range.
